Industry Standard or God's Standard: A Monday Check Up
Now as in Old Testament times we see people doing what is right in their own eyes. Far too often we allow what we see done in our various industries, right or wrong, to be the standard. Have you heard anyone lately say, "It's all good; everybody does it."
As dark as these times are we have to allow the light of God's Word and the still small voice of the Holy Spirit to guide us. We can't afford to hem, haw or hedge.
Our right standing with God is a serious matter that requires our attention moment by moment. I said it last week, there is no 'behind the scenes' or 'doing it in the dark' with God. He sees everything whether it is recorded on our Smart phones or not.
Justifying our actions is a dangerous way to live too. That team of lawyers, loyal family members, bosom buddies, co-workers and others who cosign our wrong behavior today will become real scarce when we are called out on that behavior tomorrow.
I say we need to develop the habit of 'calling ourselves out'---check ourselves before we wreck ourselves. Apostle Paul said it 2 Corinthians 13:5--"Examine yourself". Am I obeying God or going with the flow of the world? Where am I falling short, Lord? What about my thoughts, my conversations, my actions, Lord?
Lying as an example is hated by God (Proverbs 12:22) yet common in the culture. The ever so popular Judge Judy on television has some sage advice for all of us on this matter. She says, "If you don't lie, you won't need a good memory." (OUCH)
And don't worry, I'm not going to talk about carting company office supplies home, or stealing company time, or plagiarizing (i.e. taking credit for writing something we did not write), or condoning what is politically correct when we know it's wrong, or slipping off the wedding ring for just one night out on the town....
Note that in the Bible in Judges, when we see the phrase "everyone did what was right in his own eyes" it is preceded by the words "In those times there was no king in Israel."(Read Judges 17:6 and Judges 21:25)
Hold up now! I don't know about you but when I accepted Jesus as my Savior and Lord I signed up for an inner check and balance system. Hence, I've got a King on the inside. In fact I have the King of kings living inside me and when the King says do something or don't, I have to obey.
These are some crazy times we live in but that still small voice of the Holy Spirit is ever present, always, speaking, leading, encouraging, correcting us with His gentle, loving wisdom.
Yes, Donald Lawrence, I agree, there is a King in us and that King is desirous of enabling us to be our best selves so the light of Christ can beam inside of us.
"I woke up this morning with my mind stayed on Jesus" He is King of kings and I choose to let Him reign in all I say and do. It's a challenge but I am up for it, what about you?
